Where History Lives

The Van Alen Homestead, also known as the Luykas Van Alen House, is a beautifully preserved Dutch Colonial farmhouse built around 1737 in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York. With its steep gabled roof, Flemish-style brickwork, and three-room layout—each with its own entrance—it stands as a rare example of early Dutch architecture in the Hudson Valley. Operated by the Columbia County Historical Society, the site includes the Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse and a Dutch Farming Heritage Trail, offering insight into the lives of Native Americans, Dutch settlers, and enslaved Africans who shaped the region. The homestead is also believed to have inspired the Van Tassel home in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Just down the road lies Lindenwald, the stately home of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. Van Buren purchased the estate in 1839 and named it Lindenwald—“linden forest”—after the trees lining the nearby Albany Post Road. The mansion, originally built in 1797, blends Federal and Gothic Revival styles and served as Van Buren’s residence and political base until his death in 1862. Now a National Historic Site managed by the National Park Service, Lindenwald offers guided tours and exhibits that explore Van Buren’s post-presidency life, his political legacy, and the broader history of 19th-century America. Together, these two landmarks form a rich historical corridor that connects colonial craftsmanship, presidential politics, and literary legend.
